Our Physical Therapist / NARHA Instructor

Kerstin L. Fosdick
Licensed Physical Therapist
Level II AHA Registered Therapist in Classic Hippotherapy
NARHA Certified Therapeutic Riding Instructor

Kerstin Fosdick, our Program Director, is a licensed physical therapist, who is available to design customized plans to meet the needs of each individual rider.

As anyone who has talked to Kerstin may have guessed, she is not originally from around here. Kerstin was born and raised in Sweden, where her early preoccupation was cross-country skiing.  At the age of 19, Kerstin's curiosity about the American way of life led her to accept a  one-year position as a nanny for an American family in New Jersey.

Kerstin soon realized that she loved the States and wanted to stay, and so she began planning ahead for life in the U.S. She attended secretarial school during her first year here, and when her nanny contract expired, she was ready to make the transition.

She began working for the YMCA, and shortly thereafter she married and started a family a year later when her son John was born. It was at age 25 that Kerstin first became involved with horses. Her first interactions with horses taught her a great deal, and as she continued to work with them over the past 30 years, her understanding of the equine mind and body has continued to grow.

As her love for horses grew, her career path followed, and over the years she concentrated on expanding her knowledge of all aspects of horsemanship and equine care. She became a successful ranch manager, riding instructor, and horse trainer, as well as a prize-winning dressage rider.

As a Ranch Manager in McQueeney, Texas for 12 years, Kerstin supervised the operation of the 700-acre-ranch  that served as home to buffalo, longhorn cattle and wild mustangs. Working with the wild mustangs, Kerstin learned to "read" and communicate with horses through careful observation of the horse's body language and demeanor.

In 1985, her life and career path was changed for the better when she became an instructor in a therapeutic riding program. Shortly thereafter, she made it official when she earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy degree and became a licensed Physical Therapist, and later, an AHA Registered Therapist in Classic Hippotherapy.

She joined The Saddle Light Center in 1991, and has been the President of the Board and Program Director since 1999. In addition to her Saddle Light Center duties, Kerstin maintains a private practice as a Physical Therapist where she helps patients through traditional physical therapy protocols.

Kerstin lives on her 10-acre home in Marion, Texas, with 2 cats, 2 dogs, and 1 horse -- P.J., a registered Quarter Horse used for breeding.

When Kerstin isn't working or spending time with her horses, she enjoys riding motorcycles, snow skiing, water skiing, and hiking.

Briana Bachus

Briana began riding horses fifteen years ago in 1995 when her younger sister, Brenna, was awarded her own horse after proving her own earnest desires.  Briana wasn’t interested in the exciting world of show jumping, but was much more cautious, staying on the ground for a few months just grooming the barn’s own horses, eventually riding an old Quarter Horse who was nothing like his name, Cannon Ball.  Finally, Briana caught the bug, and the last thing sisters can share is a horse.  So in 1996, when she was thirteen, her Dad bought her a 2 yr old, bay, Appendix QH, gelding that had been out to pasture half it’s life.  She named him Black Jack Knavey after a song, and then it really started. For three years she stuck on him around barrels, at 4H events, and lapping the ring in western pleasure shows.  She managed to hold on, and Black Jack was lazy so his bouts of bad behavior were infrequent and Briana made college plans that kept Black Jack a pet and hobby.  All of this changed as indeed Briana’s whole world did, in December of 1999 when she had a car accident and lost both of her feet below the knee due to excessive burns after the car caught fire with her trapped inside.  The summer of 2000 saw Briana walking again, but not back in the saddle, since the little Black Jack had of training was gone from being ignored and out to pasture for almost eight months.  Now that Briana could not use stirrups without causing sores to her limbs, she realized she was infinitely vulnerable in comparison to this large animal.  Undaunted, Kathleen, Briana’s mother, found Triple H Equitherapy a NARHA center, and Kathy Harbaugh, who said, “No problem!  She can ride Sidesaddle!”  That began Briana’s long journey towards true horsemanship.  It was then she realized lower legs are not necessary to stay on board a horse, and began to try riding astride as well as aside.  After Black Jack spent time with Karen Brown of Solitaire Ranch in Bandera, Briana was ready to begin riding her own horse again.  Her passion for helping others with their unruly horses grew as Black Jack became more and more her partner, walking to a fence and standing completely still for her to mount or walking at her pace no matter how slow.  She directed her education towards her long term goal of beginning her own equestrian based therapy center.  Briana received her B.B.A in Entrepreneurial Studies from St. Mary’s University in December of 2005.  She then spent the next years working on her A.R.I.A. certification in Recreational Riding and in Driving.  She received her Level I status in both areas in 2008 and her NARHA Registered Level Riding Instructor status February of 2009 after attending the six week course offered by Equest in Wylie, TX.  She has experience in both Western and English styles of riding, as well as Sidesaddle and Driving.

Caroline Collins is a NARHA certified therapeutic riding instructor and will be starting to work for us on June 14, 2010. She will be taking on TR clients on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Caroline got involved in riding at the age of nine and participated in the hunter/jumper discipline for six years. After graduating from Ole Miss with a degree in Hospitality Servicing, she moved to Dallas where she first became involved with therapeutic riding as a volunteer. She received her certification from Equest in Wylie, Texas in March of 2010.

Stephanie Koehler and Lisa Cornell are regularly exercising and training our therapy horses.  Lisa has been a volunteer at the SLC for over three years. She has ridden most of her life, primarily in the saddle seat discipline. Lisa also keeps her own horse at Retama and is currently taking dressage lessons. She is also taking on some of the part time administrative work in the office.
